SA Reaffirms Commitment to IMO

18 July 2019 – South Africa yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the standards and values of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) at the IMO Council’s 122nd session in London.

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula said South Africa would continue to advance the objectives and the imperatives of the IMO by ensuring that ships, cargo and crew on board were safe and secure.”

In addition, Mbalula deposited an instrument of accession to the Hazardous and Noxious Substance (HNS) Protocol of 2010.

The HNS protocol was designed to provide assistance in instances where a substance, other than oil, was introduced into the marine environment creating a hazard.

“We believe that this liability and compensation instrument is of critical importance to compensate victims of incidents,” Mbalula said.

The council session will conclude on Friday. Source (F&T Weekly) https://bit.ly/2XXq2Ga
