Civil Summonses Issued For Debt Increased By 0,3% Y/Y Q1 2023

19 June 2023 – The number of civil summonses issued for debt increased by 0,3% y/y in the three months ended April 2023. The total number of civil judgements recorded for debt decreased by 1,9% over the same period.

The number of civil summonses issued for debt:

The total number of civil summonses issued for debt increased by 0,3% in the three months ended April 2023 compared with the three months ended April 2022.

The largest positive contributors to the 0,3% increase in civil summonses issued were:

  • ‘other’ debts (contributing 4,7 percentage points); and
  • services (contributing 0,7 of a percentage point).

Money lent was the largest negative contributor (contributing -2,0 percentage points).  The number of civil judgements recorded for debt The total number of civil judgements recorded for debt decreased by 1,9% in the three months ended April 2023 compared with the three months ended April 2022.

The largest negative contributors to the 1,9% decrease were civil judgements relating to:

  • goods sold (contributing -3,5 percentage points);
  • services (contributing -1,5 percentage points); and
  • rent (contributing -1,5 percentage points).

‘Other’ debt was the largest positive contributor (contributing 3,6 percentage points).

The value of civil judgements recorded for debt The total value of civil judgements recorded for debt increased by 5,1% in the three months ended April 2023 compared with the three months ended April 2022.

The largest positive contributors to the 5,1% increase were civil judgements relating to:

  • money lent (contributing 4,5 percentage points);
  • ‘other’ debts (contributing 1,6 percentage points); and
  • rent (contributing 1,3 percentage points).

Services (contributing -1,9 percentage points) and goods sold (contributing -1,4 percentage points) were the negative contributors.

In April 2023, 10 292 civil judgements for debt amounting to R263,9 million were recorded. The largest contributors to the total value of judgements were:

  • money lent (R87,1 million or 33,0%);
  • ‘other’ debts (R55,9 million or 21,2%); and
  • services (R44,7 million or 16,9%)
